Microworlds in universities and Business Schools

Using Microworlds to teach strategy or general management enables students to experience managing a dynamic system in a risk free environment.

If you are looking for materials to teach undergraduates or management students about strategy, system dynamics or general management our Microworlds provide substantial learning benefits.

You have the reassurance that they are built on solid theoretical principles, and have been tested in top MBA and executive education courses at London Business School.

Designed primarily for use in groups, our simulations directly support participants’ individual and collective learning in a risk free learning environment. They encourage team-building, are rich in materials but not over-complicated, and the messages are clear and intuitive.

These simulations improves understanding of many common business situations. The underlying frameworks are transferable to the challenges facing a great many organisations today.

"The data suggests that the learning benefits perceived by students are substantial. Moreover, mature students are more likely to benefit form microworlds than less mature ones" Prof. A. Gorges L. Romme, Tilburg Univerity, "Perceptions of the value of microworld simulation: Research note, Simulation and Gaming jnl, Vol 35 No 3, September 2004 pp 427-436

Overview of licensing options
Our Microworlds are established in the business school environment and are ideal for graduate and post-graduate education as well as for executive education. They form a substantive and popular element of course teaching, which reflects well on the teacher!
The simulations have helped make the Dynamics of Strategy course one of the most popular options at London Business School. This entire course is supported by a substantial reference text (Warren, 'Competitive Strategy Dynamics', available from bookshops and online bookstores. For more information on this book read the detailed chapter outline.

However, you do not need to go to the extent of offering a complete course in order to gain the benefits of microworld-based learning in your classes. They can be used to support strategy and business studies classes using mainstream course texts, and include materials that go beyond what these traditional sources typically cover.

The simulations can form as large or small a part of your course as you wish, and illustrative teaching schedules are included on many of our product information pages. Students benefit from group sessions where role-play is possible, and from individual study. Teams are encouraged not to "video game", but to step back and develop specific, robust strategies which they then test using the Microworlds.

> Each simulation has its own learning points and so you will wish to consider how to incorporate them in your current programmes. See an overview of Strategy Dynamics Microworlds.

Learning about Strategy Dynamics can be achieved in stages depending on your learning style and requirements.
