Microworlds - business simulations for individuals

Our business simulations demonstrate the importance of the balance of both tangible and intangible resources. Learning to identify the key resources in a business and understanding the relationships between them is important for good decision making. Microworlds can be used either as:

  • an exercise in learning about the dynamics of business - they are often used in the teaching of System Dynamics
OR
  • as the first stage in learning more about the Strategy Dynamics approach which can be applied to all sizes of business organisation and also applies to not-for-profit concerns.

Although designed primarily for tutored groups, our Microworld simulations support personal learning too. They are rich in materials but not over-complicated, and the messages behind them are clear and intuitive.

Simulation features

  • Microworld documentation includes substantial background material, and suggested further readings.
  • Instructions and online help to guide you through using the simulation.
  • These simulations are designed to test insight and management skill, simply putting in decisions and hoping for the best won't work! You need to work up an understanding of what is going on, and a coherent plan for steering the business to prosperity.
  • A number of publications about Strategy Dynamics are also available that will help you learn more about planning strategy using these methods. We recommend starting with the executive summary as an introduction to the approach.
  • Each microworld includes a variety of management challenges - pre-set situations for you to test your insight - and you can create your own challenges too.
  • Each of the simulations is designed to communicate specific learning points, so have a look at the selection available of microworlds available to find the one most relevant for your needs - information about each can be found under the "more information" link.
