Strategy Dynamics Worksheets
How can you get at the root of a strategic issue? If you can do so quickly, what
effect would it have on your performance? The Strategy Dynamics approach
enables you to build an integrated and fact-based picture of how the resources
of your business are developing through time, as a result of their mutual
interdependence, management policies and external opportunities and
constraints.

This document provides worksheets and guidance notes for applying the Strategy
Dynamics method to practical challenges facing businesses and non-profit
organisations. They are intended to help management teams, leaders of strategy
projects, or consultants work through the Strategy Dynamics process, to arrive
at a coherent, communicable and adaptable story of where the business is
heading into the future.
The materials on this site all help you to understand and learn about the
approach, and these worksheets can help you to apply it - but remember, like
any business analysis technique, this method is only as valuable as the quality
of information and thinking that are put into it.
To use the worksheets effectively, refer to the detailed explanations provided
in Kim Warrens' book - Competitive Strategy Dynamics
and in a series of related articles available on this site.

These worksheets can be used either alone, or with groups, to build the picture
of your strategic architecture. There is, though, a limit to the extent and
flexibility of such hard-copy materials. So you will find the mystrategytm
mapping and modelling software useful for going further - in two distinct
stages. First, you can map historic and expected data, together with their
inter-relationships in a manner that is clearer and more intuitive than
spreadsheets allow. Secondly, you can incorporate the quantitative relationship
that reflect how resources actually develop through time, and the
interdependencies that result, to create simple simulations of past and future
performance.
The Strategy Dynamics Workbook is organised as follows:
Worksheets and notes. Each worksheet is shown, with notes and
tips.
Worked example. The core worksheets are worked through for the
case of a low-cost internet savings bank, to illustrate how the process is
applied.
Illustrative strategic architectures. A series of diverse
examples are described, to show the result of applying the worksheets to a
range of common industry cases.
Worksheet master-set for copying. Blank originals of the
worksheets are provided, which may be copied for personal use. Note that
regular copyright conditions apply.
